The Role of Youth in Sustainable Development

Young people represent the largest demographic in Africa, with over 60% of the continent's population under the age of 25. This demographic dividend presents an unprecedented opportunity — but only if we invest wisely.

Why Youth Matter

Sustainable development cannot be achieved without the active participation of young people. They bring energy, creativity, and a deep stake in the future. When youths are empowered with education, skills, and opportunities, they become the most powerful agents of change.

The Youth Leadership Academy

AWAYAI's Youth Leadership Academy was established to harness this potential. The program combines:

  • Leadership and civic education
  • Entrepreneurship and innovation training
  • Mentorship from industry leaders
  • Community project implementation
  • Digital and 21st-century skills
  • Impact So Far

Over 5,000 young Nigerians have graduated from the Academy, initiating more than 200 community projects in the process. From establishing community libraries to launching agribusiness ventures, these young leaders are proving that age is not a barrier to impact.

    A Call to Action

As we work towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we must place youth at the center of our strategies. This means not just creating programs for youth, but creating space for youth leadership in designing and implementing solutions.
